CHIA v FLAX

Flaxseed has been a significant component of human use throughout history, primarily for its durable fiber, which is utilized in the production of fine linen, and for the oil extracted from its seeds, which serves as a drying agent in paints. While there are numerous health blogs that draw parallels between chia seeds and flaxseed, such comparisons are misleading.

Flaxseed oil and seed contains anti-nutrients that inhibit the absorption of vitamin B-6, an essential nutrient crucial for enzyme breakdown and the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Additionally, phytic acid, present in various seeds, nuts, and legumes, binds minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, rendering them less available for absorption. Notably, flaxseed contains significantly higher levels of phytic acid, ranging from 23 to 33g per 100g, compared to chia seeds, which contain between 0.96 to 1.16g per 100g. This difference underscores the superior mineral bioavailability of chia seeds.
